Returning by Sea

This painting is inspired by the return leg of a Canary Islands inter-island crossing — when the colours of the sea and sky look familiar but feel different because you are pointed the other way. The composition mirrors a more conventional seascape but inverts the warmer and cooler bands, giving the eye the slight, productive friction of a view it has seen before in reverse.
The piece is a quiet experiment in perspective. Pairs well with Quiet Crossing (its outbound counterpart) — hung together they make a small narrative about leaving and coming back.
